Bipolar disorder, or manic-depressive disorder, is a mental illness that involves extreme mood swings that interfere with your daily living and relationships. These mood changes range from mania to severe depression. Such changes in mood may occur a few times a year or a few times a day. Occasionally people with bipolar disorder can experience both extremes at the same time, in what is known as a “mixed state.” Bipolar disorder is believed to affect as many as 5.7 million Americans. The symptoms may vary for each individual, and there are several types of bipolar disorder based on different patterns. The types of bipolar disorder include bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia.

Utah Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy based on a simple concept: what we think causes our feelings and behaviors. This is a type of talk therapy that focuses on how the way you think affects the things you feel and do. Your thoughts are the primary reason for your actions.
Our Goals Are Limited By Beliefs, But Self-Awareness Opens The DoorEvolving-Ego-Shapes A person experiencing depression or an eating disorder will never get better until certain mental roadblocks are overcome. Those mental roadblocks often reflect outdated or unhealthy belief systems that the person has subconsciously incorporated into life choices. Those choices might stem from past experiences, internalized criticism or long-standing fears. Past experiences from childhood, peer-pressure in school, or a strict religious upbringing make up the whole person, even when the parts are somewhat dysfunctional and crippling. The truth is, our goals can only go as far as our belief systems will allow. The great news is that self-awareness is a sign that we are ready for progress. Filling the gap between dropping unhealthy belief systems and arriving at true self-awareness is what cognitive behavioral therapy is all about.

When you have depression or a depressive disorder, you’re more than just unhappy for a time. Everyone has bad days every now and again, but if you have a depressive disorder, you’re most likely living with constant feelings of sadness and hopelessness, and of being removed for everything. Maybe the activities that once brightened up your day now feel dull, and they just don’t cheer you up as they once did. Or maybe your mental health has reached a point where it feels difficult to simply live life, and you’re having trouble getting out of bed every day. It might feel like not even your closest friends and family understand what you’re going through.

Family therapy is a solution based psychotherapy that can help your family improve relationships, learn how to work together effectively, and to develop new behavioral patterns. Regardless if the issue is with a child, teen, spouse, parent or sibling, Pathways Real Life Recovery in Utah can help. When working with a Utah family therapist, your whole family will learn to examine your family’s ability to problem solve and to express thoughts and feelings in a positive manner. Every family is different, with a unique social structure that only applies to them. If one member of the family has a mental illness, alcohol addiction, death, divorce, or drug addiction, family therapy can be very beneficial. When one member of a family suffers from something like this, not only can it be a product of their family life but it can also have negative effects on the whole family. This is why family therapy is such a useful tool in the therapeutic process. In the case of addiction, the affected family member may require individual residential treatment, medication management, and sometimes the rest of the family members attend a family therapy session to learn how to empower vs enable their loved one.

There are many emotions which are not only difficult to define but are even more challenging to understand. Among the most demanding and confusing to experience is grief. Grief can manifest itself in many ways, but generally is described as a deep sensation of sadness, especially after loss. Grief looks and feels differently for each person. Crying, screaming, yelling, withdrawing, isolating or creatively expressing one’s grief are just some of the ways feelings are processed. Further still, some people are not sure of what they need. Their behavior may seem erratic and unpredictable. They may prefer the company of friends, or withdraw completely. No matter the expression of grief, it is important to know that help is always available. If you are experiencing symptoms of loss that are affecting your life, counseling might be a good fit to help find the answers.

Pathways is an in-home, family oriented alcohol treatment, and a non 12 step rehab program. Our services are solution and empowerment based. We assist clients to learn to learn to love and value themselves, because it is their unhealthy beliefs that lead people into addiction. Lasting alcoholism recovery can only be sustained when the person seeking treatment recognizes their own personal value, and then chooses to make it a priority. Pathways gives clients the tools to realize their self-worth and see that they don’t need alcohol to cope with their problems. By helping them to see that they have value in this world, it opens up the doors for them to make a conscious decision to change. Pathways also helps them to build and repair the relationships that were harmed by their addiction and puts a support system in place that effectively eliminates the triggers and thoughts that would drive them to use in the first place. By taking a whole life approach to treatment, Pathways ensures that after achieving sobriety for a short time, the client is not immediately put back into the situation that led them to addiction in the first place. We develop personalized treatment programs to assist individuals to learn to restructure their unhealthy beliefs, and our clients to do more than just recover – they learn to thrive. Our caring staff uses evidence based methods to build confidence and enable clients to regain control of their lives and alcohol addiction.

Many people with a dual diagnosis practice self-medication, where they use alcohol or drugs in an attempt to manage anxiety, depression, or other painful emotions. Gambling Addiction or Problem Gambling is defined by the urge to continue gambling despite potentially harmful consequences or a desire to stop. Exactly what causes gambling addiction is not clearly defined, but may be the result of a combination of biological and environmental factors. Compulsive gambling can become a progressively serious issue that has potential to destroy lives. According to the National Gambling Impact Study Commission (NGISC) gambling addiction affects approximately 2-5% of Americans. Gambling stimulates the brain’s reward system, similar to the effect of drugs or alcohol addiction, and this can lead to gambling addiction. Gambling is different from many addictions in that it is defined by whether it causes harm to the gambler or others, rather than on the gambler’s behavior. Because of this, problem gambling is not defined as an addiction but an impulse control disorder.

Have you been on several different antidepressants and none of them work for you? Genetic testing may be the answer you are looking for. Sadly, a lot of doctors just prescribe what the drug companies pay them to for certain conditions. With dozens of medications that treat the same condition, genetic testing evaluates your genetic makeup to determine what prescription and how much of it will be effective for you and your body. When you are diagnosed with anxiety, depression, bipolar disease, schizophrenia or other related conditions, your doctor considers many different factors to determine the best medication for you. Influences like your age, lifestyle, overall health and other medications are considered when choosing the best treatment. Unfortunately, most individuals have to endure the lengthy and frustrating process of trying multiple medications before an effective treatment is found.
Hormone imbalances can account for several different problems in the human body. Thyroid conditions can cause symptoms such as inability to lose weight, dry skin, brittle hair, and loss of energy. In addition, there are several different types of hormones at play in the body at any given time such as estrogen and testosterone. All of these hormones can cause terrible side effects in mood, appearance, and general disposition.

Strength based rehab is a program that uses a persons strengths to overcome an addiction. Often in rehab, the focus is on an addiction, or even the underlying shortcoming that causes the addiction. Though both are important to understand in order to overcome addiction, focusing on one’s strengths is often a more effective way of growing past an addiction. We start with a focus on furthering the development of your strengths as a self-support system after an addiction. Developing these strengths also helps build confidence and self-esteem which makes facing addiction easier.

Trying to understand your teenager can sometimes make you want to tear your hair out. With their strong desire for independence, teens don’t always make the best decisions. But they also represent what’s so great about being young: idealism, energy and a spark for life. With patient nurturing and understanding, teens grow into special, complex, healthy adults.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an empirically-supported form of treatment that is designed as an intervening method of correcting behavior and improving the parent-child relationship. This method of treatment is designed for young children and their caregivers, whether parents or otherwise, and focuses primarily on a live-coaching model in which parents are directly involved in the therapy sessions. During parent child interaction therapy sessions, a therapist will typically only act as an observer who is shielded from the child’s view, but will sometimes encourage questions and reactions by remotely coaching the parent through a hidden listening device. Because parent child interaction therapy takes place usually between the ages of two and eight when rapid psychological development is occurring, developmental differences are treated as a baseline of determining appropriate therapy activities between the parent and the child.
